Alzheimer Victim's Compulsion to Wander

Alzheimer Victim's Compulsion to Wander
I fully agree with this editorial from Kathy. She is voicing all the concerns I had with the article too. The author's suggestion of a geri-chair was a real surprise! (not a good one) I applaud Kathy for taking the time to address all these points. Thanks!

Ms. Wiederhold, I too read Starr's piece in the Alzheimer's Daily News.

I found your gross generalizations offensive, you state, "People with dementia still enjoy life, if they are in the right setting and environment."

If you have lived with this horrendous disease, or taken the time to truly get involved with the residents at Sally's Garden, you would know that depression and dementia go hand and hand, to imply that all individuals with this horrendous disease are all still enjoying life is not correct. Of course they have good days and bad days, However, if you work with persons with dementia and have taken the time to get to know your residents, you surely have observed the depression, fear, and anger that many feel facing such a terrible prognosis.

Not all families have the inclination to place their loved ones in a facility, nor can all families afford such care. We had to place Mother in a facility; we moved her four- (4) times, due to poor care. I can assure you, there are no "wonderful options" for any of us that face this dreadful illness on a personal basis.

More often than not, those that work at these 'wonderful options' get into their cars at the end of the day, and do not go home to a loved one with dementia.

If any readers are thinking of placing their loved ones I would suggest that you contact your state ombudsman to ascertain if there have been any complaints made against the facility you are considering, and visit memberofthefamily.net.
This site offers a wealth of valuable information.
